Yo class 05,

A new semester, a new start. Welcome back to school!

I think i will have to re-activate or should i say revived our class blog now. I think it is still a good way of disseminating information since i believe almost everyone go online every other day.

Firstly, for those who are interested in the APEC event, Daniel have already sent out the scanned copy of the details to all of your emails. Please remember that the deadline is tomorrow 20th October at 10.30am.

As i have zero experience in both of them, i seek of your help to decide on which cafe to go.

I have already checked out their websites and have shortlisted a few promotions that may help in our savings.

PHASE 1 of your internship programme for Year 3 has began. For those who are interested to look for your internship companies may begin NOW!

Deadline for your internship confirmation must reach me by 21 Nov (Fri). The earlier you may let me know the better it will be.

Once Phase 1 is over, school will allocate internship company & interviews. We will be unable to accept companies found on your own.

Tourism Internship PHASE 1 procedures:

1. List down prospective companies that you are keen to seek interviews in.

2. Seek approval from your internship coordinator, he/ she will advise if those companies are appropriate or not.

3. Once approved, approach companies for interviews. You may cold call them. Appropriate persons to approach are typically HR dept for larger companies or senior managers/ general managers in smaller companies.

4. Prepare a set of cover letter and resume (on tips on how to create them, pls refer to the ‘Tourism Internship’ folder.

5. You must confirm the internship position for yourself which includes the position, job scope & allowance. SP documentation will be provided to you once you confirm the above.

The deadline for your submission on your allocated company is 21 Nov (Fri).

Period of Internship is from 30 Mar - 16 Aug 2009 (20 weeks). No variation of the above period is permitted.

HOW TO GET YOUR SEMESTER EXAM RESULTS

There are three ways in which a student can get his exam results on the day of release:
(a) Check his Windows Live Mail mailbox,
(b) Login to view through SAS. The timing of the release of exam results for all full-time courses will be staggered on Wednesday, 17 Sept 2008 as follows:
SB 10.30 am

(c) Reading SMS (after 8.00 am) for those who had subscribed before 17th Sept. 2008.

Windows Live Mail mailbox
You do not need to subscribe for this service. In the early hours of the day that your semester exam result is due to be released, your results will be automatically sent to your Windows Live Mail mailbox. You will therefore be able to get your exam results through the Windows Live Mail mailbox, hours earlier than through SAS and SMS.

have anyone put on weight after the sumptuous on Friday. I hope no one did, except for Isaac whom all of us wants to see some progress in his weight meter.

STB would like to discuss the possibility of woking with SP on recruiting F1 service ambassadors (preferably in the tourism/hospitality management). Their role would be to provide key F1 and tourist product information for visitors during the F1 period. They would probably be stationed at key tourist touch points such as Orchard/ Marina belt, Clark Quay and Boat Quay etc. We would also like to check on the no of students under the hospitality or tourism management in your poly.

Another Job opportunity for F1.

As Hilton Singapore is involved in the upcoming Singapore F1 race on 26-28 Sept, we would like to seek your help in approaching your students to work with our F&B - Banquet Dept during the F1 week.

This will be a good opportunity for your students to gain their work experience during the F1 event, get to work with other hotel partners for the event and they will be rewarded attractively.

The arrangement should be made between the School (Singapore Polytechnic) and the Hotel (Hilton Singapore). Students are not encourage to apply directly. Attached is the form which you can use for the application. Please feel free to discuss with me what is the best ways we could consolidate this list.

Preferably, we would like the same students to work throughout the whole period from 24 Sept to 29 Sept if not, students should commit at least for the period from 26 Sept to 28 Sept (Race dates).

A messsage from Ms Chen regarding ITP.

Hi, great new for DTRM students esp 04, 05.

Resort World Sentosa has offered students of SP, NP, NYP and TP ITP opportunities in Universal Studio, Orlando, USA in March 2009.

Some details as follow:

1) Duration: 4 months, early March - July 2009, Thus, for the last month of ITP, these students will be posted to local ITP company for a period of between 4 - 6 weeks. Not necessary to attend classes.
2) Salary: US$7.25 per hr, min 30 hrs - max 40 hrs per wk.
3) Up front estimated costs : Airfare = S$2700, Agent fee + medical insurance = US$800, US visa fee, CNCC fee = S$200.
3) Accommodation = In town, not in hostel. The Agent will source for accommodation for all, students are most likely to stay within close proximity to each other. Cost of accommodation US$150 per week for a 4 bedded apartment.
4) Own transportation from accommodation to work.
5) Selected students will be offered permanent employment opportunity in our IR and will be engaged to help out in the IR's opening in 2009/10.

Daniel and i have talked to Mr Ronald regarding the class outing. The meeting next Monday on the 14th July will be at our own expense. This is because we will be having our class outing after our end of year exams, either on our last paper or 29 August. We will be having a nice dinner either at Mr Ronald's crickets club or somewhere else in which Mr Ronald will arrange for us.

Please keep yourself free and try to make it for the class outing. I really hope that everyone can turn up on that day.

Besides that, not forgetting our beloved Jun Siang who have come all the way back from Switzerland and his kawaii girlfriend. We will have to meet him a day before he goes back. Issues ...

Yo class, going to address a few issues in this post so just bear with the naggy aunty here for a while , alright.

Attendance-
Please take note of your own attendance and turn up for all lessons as much as possible. Remember to submit LOAs if you are unwell and are unable to come for lessons.
Punctuality-
Punctuality is a virtue as we all know. Hence, i hope that everyone could just put in extra effort to be punctual for all lectures and tutorials. Those who need morning calls, i am happy to do you the service. Try not to stay up too late if you know you are unable to get up on time the next day. Leave your house earlier if you live far from the school so to make it on time for lessons. Let's just put in a bit more effort in this, alright?
No eating and drinking in class-
Please restrain from eating or drinking in class. It is against the school rules to do so. It is very important to study in a conducive environment free of rubbish and food discards. Besides that, we should also be considerate to the people around us as the smell of food penetrates in the whole lecture or tutorial room and some others may not like it. Hence, please do not bring any food or drinks to class.
Speaking in mother tongues-
Our deputy director have brought up the issue that we are an English institution and so students are restrained from speaking in their mother tongues to their lecturers as well as fellow classmates in lecture rooms and for tutorials.
Appropriate attire and footwear-
Students are reminded not to wear slippers to school as it is against the school rules and a fine of $50 will be imposed if found doing so. Besides that, girls are reminded not to wear hot shorts and spaghetti tops as this too as well is against the school rules.

That's all for the time being. I hope everyone can try to abide to all school rules and uphold the class reputation to the best that we can. We are a wonderful class make up of wonderful people and so let us stand out as a role model class.

Another thing is that please please please do let me know if you are going to be late for lessons or not coming due to some reasons as it will help me greatly in marking your attendance. Thank you for the cooperation.

Class outing ..

My dearest classmates,

I know some of you might be taken aback by the meeting on Thursday. It just something no one will expect it to happen. Whatever it is, i just hope everyone will work together as a class to make things better. I understand some of you may be upset with the new groupings but we just can't possibly please everyone. If there are really any violent objections, please do approach Daniel or me, and we promise to try to solve the problem and fight for your rights.

Besides that, i would also like to talk about our class outing which will be subsidise by the school @ $7.50 per person as well as outings that we organise ourselves to bond the class.

Agnes, to my delight, has suggested going to Moberly for singing session. I am getting super excited just by thinking about it. It's like so cool with the whole class singing together. Please be rest assured that i will try my very best to control myself for holding to the microphone for too long. You guys must have faith in me, alright? It will definitely be a great opportunity for the class to sing and bond together. If there are no objections, i suggest we go either on Monday or Wednesday when we end lessons early. Please do give me feedbacks, alright?

Next, is the class outing that will be subsidise by the school. I have received several suggestions like going to ice-skating which i have already checked up the price. Student rate @ $11.80 per person on Wednesday for unlimited hours of skating and free rental of skating equipments @ Jurong Entertainment Centre.

Another suggestion will be going to Mind cafe or Settler (i hope i spelled correctly) for games session. Some of our classmates have been to Mind Cafe before and find it fun.

Or a simpler one will be watching a movie and then having a nice dinner.

The final decision will lies with the majority so i will need to know all of your opinions as soon as possible.

Well, i think you guys have enough of me already right. I shall not blabber anymore. See Ya.

Yo man, what's up!

I am back to update about boring administrative stuff so just bear with me for a while, alright?

Firstly, please remember to bring $10 next week for class fund. For those who have not paid this week, you will have to pay $20 next Monday. I know everyone is facing a major financial crisis now but i promise that it is only for this month that we have to pay so much. The money are mainly used for printing of notes. After this month, we will be back to our usual $4 per month. Hence, just bear with it till the end of this month.

Secondly, the donation card. The minimum target for the donation card will be $10 per person. It is not compulsory but i really hope that everyone could at least make some effort to raise as much as you can. I will need the cards back by the 2nd of May together with the money you've raised. If you lost the card, please inform me immediately as I will have to make a police report immediately. Hence, to avoid all the hassle, please take good care of your cards.

Thirdly, I would appreciate if everyone will send me a message if you are not coming for lectures or are going to be late but will still be coming so it will be much more easier when i mark attendance.

Lastly, i hope everyone will take the effort to check our class blog now and then. Let's not waste Alicia's effort of creating such a nice blog for our class. I will be posting reminders and announcements now and then so just look up for updates.

Yo class, first week of school has flown by quite fast huh. Hope you pretty girls and handsome guys are enjoying school up till now.

Anyway, i have some reminders about the cancellation of lectures that i am going to post here as reminders.

Tomorrow's Tourist Behavior and Research (TBR) is cancelled.

On Friday (18/04/08) , Financial & Management Accounting for Hospitality (FMAH) tutorial is cancelled.

For next Tuesday (22/04/08) ,Financial & Management Accounting for Hospitality (FMAH) lecture will commence 15 minutes earlier at 0845. Please try your best to come on time to avoid missing important points that will be taught.

Gentle reminder to all to be punctual on Friday for Ms Chen Yen Yin's tutorial as all of you should know how strict she is in taking attendance. If you do not wish to be marked absent, please take the effort to come early. Besides that, please be dressed in the correct attire as i don't think anyone wants to get a fine on the first day of school, right?

GEMS

Hi, this is regarding GEMS again.
As you guys know, there are three different days where we can have our GEMS on.

I would like to propose that all of us choose GEMS on only two out of the three days given, and keep the other one day free. This is to ensure that everyone in the class have a common free slot, so that it can be used for any project meetings in the future. Otherwise it would be difficult to arrange the meetings, like what we encountered in semester 2.

Let's decide which day to keep free. Tag on the tagboard or something.
Monday 8am-10am
Wednesday 1pm-3pm
Friday 1pm-3pm

I would prefer to keep Wednesday free cus there's no lessons after GEMS... So if there's project meetings we don't have to rush for lessons, if no projects then can go home (:

JI detainee Mas Selamat Kastari escapes from Singapore detention centre
Posted: 27 February 2008 2045 hrs

SINGAPORE : A massive police operation is underway in Singapore after the leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah network here, Mas Selamat Kastari, escaped from detention at 4.05pm on Wednesday.

A statement from the Home Affairs Ministry says Mas Selamat walks with a limp and is presently at large.

He is not known to be armed and is one of Singapore's most wanted men.

Extensive police resources have been deployed to track him down after he escaped from the Whitley Road Detention Centre.

Anyone with information about him can contact the police at 999.

Mas Selamat was arrested by the Indonesian police on Bintan island in January 2006.

He was picked up then for using a fake identity card.

Based on investigations then, Indonesia's elite anti-terror police discovered he was the leader of the Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah network, a terrorist organisation.

They then deported the man to Singapore in 2006.

The 45-year-old father of four was also said to be involved in JI's plans to mount attacks against foreign and local establishments here.

These included the US Embassy and American Club, the Defence Ministry headquarters at Bukit Gombak and the Education Ministry building at North Buona Vista Drive.

Mas Selamat fled Singapore in December 2001 following an Internal Security Department operation against the terrorist organisation.

The militant leader had been on the run after Singapore authorities discovered plans to crash seven truck filled with bombs at various locations around the island.

Investigations also revealed that he was the mastermind behind a plan to hijack an airplane and crash it into Changi airport.

When he was last arrested in Indonesia, officers found literature on bomb making on the man.

Mas Selamat's deportation to Singapore two years ago was seen as a significant development in the close network of cooperation amongst intelligence officers in the region to share information on terror suspects and to defeat the terror threat.

The islandwide manhunt has fanned out to areas in Beauty World in Upper Bukit Timah and Goldhill Avenue near Barker Road.

Officers are also knocking on homes asking residents if they have seen the escapee.

Police have also formed a formidable blockade around Malcolm Park, near the Singapore Chinese Girls' School. - CNA/ch

about the bbq at Mrs Tan place, she was emailing me and she suggested early march. first two weeks of march. so everyone please state your name and days/dates you prefer :)
eg.

1. Delene- monday, friday or saturday
