Yo class 05,

A new semester, a new start. Welcome back to school!

I think i will have to re-activate or should i say revived our class blog now. I think it is still a good way of disseminating information since i believe almost everyone go online every other day.

Firstly, for those who are interested in the APEC event, Daniel have already sent out the scanned copy of the details to all of your emails. Please remember that the deadline is tomorrow 20th October at 10.30am.

Next, coming up next will be a nice gathering with Jun Siang.

I have shortlisted 2 places for our gathering.

Mind's Cafe and Settlers' Cafe.

As i have zero experience in both of them, i seek of your help to decide on which cafe to go.

I have already checked out their websites and have shortlisted a few promotions that may help in our savings.

For Mind's Cafe,

They have this special promotion every Monday to Friday at all out outlets. Enjoy 4 hours of fun for $5 per pax and it comes with free flow of drinks! Prices excluding service charge and GST though.

We will most likely be visiting the outlet at Dhoby Ghaut. Actual address is as follows:
60A Prinsep Street, Opposite POMO - Formerly Parklane

For Settler's Cafe,

There are lots of promotions going on. However, i am not sure how long can we play with the packages offered. Someone please enlighten me!

If we are going for this cafe, most likely we will be going to the outlet at Holland Village.

Please do me a favour and let me know all of your preferences by next Tuesday so that i will have time to make a reservation.

Lastly, don't forget to wear the "Hollywood" shirt on the day itself!

Hear from you guys and gals soon.

Hi 04 & 05

PHASE 1 of your internship programme for Year 3 has began. For those who are interested to look for your internship companies may begin NOW!

Deadline for your internship confirmation must reach me by 21 Nov (Fri). The earlier you may let me know the better it will be.

Once Phase 1 is over, school will allocate internship company & interviews. We will be unable to accept companies found on your own.

-----------

Tourism Internship PHASE 1 procedures:

1. List down prospective companies that you are keen to seek interviews in.

2. Seek approval from your internship coordinator, he/ she will advise if those companies are appropriate or not.

3. Once approved, approach companies for interviews. You may cold call them. Appropriate persons to approach are typically HR dept for larger companies or senior managers/ general managers in smaller companies.

4. Prepare a set of cover letter and resume (on tips on how to create them, pls refer to the ‘Tourism Internship’ folder.

5. You must confirm the internship position for yourself which includes the position, job scope & allowance. SP documentation will be provided to you once you confirm the above.

The deadline for your submission on your allocated company is 21 Nov (Fri).

Period of Internship is from 30 Mar - 16 Aug 2009 (20 weeks). No variation of the above period is permitted.

-----------

Resumes & Cover Letters

Do start preparing for your resume and standard cover letters for your upcoming application. You need to submit them soon. There are much resources in the BizIT Lib, some available as follows:

Hey 05, it's the last week of holidays.

Time seems to fly when we are all enjoying ourselves. However, we still need to get ourselves back into the study mood.

The following are some emails sent by our lecturers to remind us to purchase lecture and tutorial notes. I believe all of you have already received the emails. I will still post them here for those who don't check their ICHAT email.

Please purchase a copy of your BA0176 GBE lecture and tutorial notes from the Third Floor Photocopy centre before going for your lecture or tutorial classes in Week 1. Cost is about $10.80 per copy.

Message from Ms Wenda Leong.

Dear ALL Year 2's,

Welcome to the World of Casino Management !

In the various sections, you will find lecture notes and tutorials which you will need to print and bring to Lectures and Tutorials. The material is in addition to readings from the textbook which will give you a better understanding of the module.

You will have to do your readings and your tutorial assignments prior to classes otherwise you may not be able to keep up with the chapters.

At all times, should you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Ms. Kwok Wai Leng ( Tutor) or myself (Module Coordinator) for assistance.

We trust you will have an enjoyable and fruitful semester.

Best regards

RONALD SATHIANATHAN

Please get your copy of BA0201 UCCD notes from the third floor Photocopy Centre before going for your lecture or tutorial class in Week 1. Cost is about $10.00 per copy.

Message from Ms Wenda Leong

I will be ordering all the notes together as a class as soon as school starts.

I would like to seek all of your help to pay class fund when school reopens so that we can use the funds to buy the notes. I will be checking with Iris the amount of class fund we have left and decide how much we need to pay.

Special attention to Wee Ling, Stella, Joann and Elaine to pay $3 to class fund as the rest have already paid $3 to class fund during the class outing.

I hope everyone will enjoy the last of their holidays.

HOW TO GET YOUR SEMESTER EXAM RESULTS

There are three ways in which a student can get his exam results on the day of release:
(a) Check his Windows Live Mail mailbox,
(b) Login to view through SAS. The timing of the release of exam results for all full-time courses will be staggered on Wednesday, 17 Sept 2008 as follows:
SB 10.30 am

(c) Reading SMS (after 8.00 am) for those who had subscribed before 17th Sept. 2008.

Windows Live Mail mailbox
You do not need to subscribe for this service. In the early hours of the day that your semester exam result is due to be released, your results will be automatically sent to your Windows Live Mail mailbox. You will therefore be able to get your exam results through the Windows Live Mail mailbox, hours earlier than through SAS and SMS.

Sentosa is one of our preferred companies for DTRM Internship programs which you will undergo in your third year and as such, they are very supportive of the polytechnics, especially Singapore Poly as all our Interns who have been attached there have returned with very favourable reports and results. It is an interesting place to get first hand experience of Tourism BUT you MUST have the desire and passion for it.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms Josephine Chong directly.

One final point. If you do go for any interview, please dress smart and proper as you are reflective of yourself, your school and the Poly. I say this as a reminder as some who went for the F1 interview at the Singapore Hilton recently were very poorly dressed with unkept hair and obviously gave a negative impression. Singapore Hilton is also one of our Internship companies and the GM is a personal friend.

With that, Happy Holidays.

Cheers

RON

The following are some photos taken using Delene's camera and my phone.

Lastly, i would like to listen feedbacks from the class so that we could make the next class outing a more pleasant one.

HELLO! Take a look at this!

What is YOUR culture? What is YOUR heritage? Is there culture and heritage in old buildings?

Join us for a refreshing and thought-provoking look at the hot debate - Should old buildings stay, or go.

Set in the Old Parliament House, this roving and interactive performance encourages you to think about these questions. Characters from the past, present and the future will come alive right before your eyes as you roam around the Old Parliament House.

Expect a tour of the Old Parliament House upon your arrival and a fun time as you take on the role of a Planning Executive in Singapore's new Ministry of Conservation. Your task is to design a list of rules and regulations for conserving old buildings. From coolies to hoteliers, the characters you meet in the corridors of the Old Parliament House will give you an insight into their lives and their thoughts about conserving or destroying an old building.

Through this experience, you will be encouraged to think about Singapore's history, your own culture, Singapore's future and the part that everyone has to play in shaping it.

Ready to play a part and spend a few hours thinking about our heritage, our old buildings?

Join us at 'Pieces of Me':

Date: 9 Sep 2008 (Tue)
Time: 9.00am OR 12.00 noon (please select one time slot*)
Venue: The Old Parliament (Arts House) - one-way transport provided fromSP (pick up point: outside Convention Centre)

For those who are interesetd in the ITP at Universal Studios, please revert to Mr Conrad as soon as possible.

Another job opportunity during F1 period.

STB would like to discuss the possibility of woking with SP on recruiting F1 service ambassadors (preferably in the tourism/hospitality management). Their role would be to provide key F1 and tourist product information for visitors during the F1 period. They would probably be stationed at key tourist touch points such as Orchard/ Marina belt, Clark Quay and Boat Quay etc. We would also like to check on the no of students under the hospitality or tourism management in your poly.

If those who are interested, revert to Mr Conrad as soon as possible as well. If you are interested, let me know so i can email you a sample schedule.

For those who are interested in ITP at China, please let me know by Wednesday, 9pm.
